sparkle
Friday, June 4 | 9:24 AM

I woke up on the morning of 4 June 2010 to a pleasant surprise...

A graffiti-painted train pulling into Kembangan MRT station was filmed by an intrigued individual who then posted it on YouTube. Just like the pimped up ride, the video made its round before hitting some raw nerves.

I really thought the graffiti added a sparkle to our rather "sterile" surroundings - a description made by a fellow foreign backpacker I had met on a trip years ago.

Anway, the practice of spray-painting trains can be traced to New York in the 1970s, when modern graffiti artists broke into subway yards to 'hit trains', usually along the sides of the cars. Unfortunately, the talented individual pulled his trick at the wrong place and at the wrong time. Not surprisingly, the authorities were quick to slap the "vandalism" label, citing terrorism experts who were concerned about the "breach of security", which comes at a time when public transport networks are viewed as potential terror targets. Just last month, it was revealed that the Orchard MRT station had been a possible terror target.

A reader of the popular online interactive website, STOMP, was not very tolerant of this bright spark by the vandal either:

"The Swiss vandal also needs to be severely dealt with. Years ago we also had another foreign vandal named Michael Fay, and we caned him for spraying paint on several cars.

"This case is no different. In fact it's far worse, since it was done on public property. Cane him as well, don't deport him. We need to show the world our stand on such crimes.

"This is a clear case of the kind of lousy imported values these foreigners bring with them. Why are they being anti-establishment when it's not even their country?"

Oh wow! With the recent slash and attack incident, where a local teen was attacked by some marauding foreign workers at the Kallang area, still fresh on our psyche, some must be wondering if Singaporeans are now paying the price for globalisation. Perhaps the recent government initiatives to promote the arts and the aesthetics have yet to rub onto that critic.

Nevertheless, the longstanding publication powerhouse, The Straits Times, concluded their report on 4 June 2010 with this very stark reminder on life on this tiny red dot of Singapore,

"Under the law, those guilty of vandalism can be fined up to $2,000 or jailed up to three years, and caned between three and eight strokes.

Those convicted of entering a protected place without permission can receive a maximum punishment of two years' jail and a $1,000 fine."

The pimped-up train has since been scrubbed and now plies the tracks looking sparkling clean again.

Incidentally, I was walking through an underpass late last month when I noticed the above remains of a graffiti which I had first come across almost ten years ago. Naturally, I whipped out my handphone and took a picture of it again. It was only then that I realised that the new addition to the frame was the NO CYCLING FINE sign at the far left hand corner. :)

fly away
Sunday, May 2 | 11:37 PM

I love this installation of paper planes which I came across in March. But seriously, they should not be mounted onto walls - even if to illustrate the fluidity of motion and flight. They should be held in the excited hand, ran along in open spaces and tossed into the blue skies where they live free, even for that brief moment.

Sprite-ly sea legs
Sunday, April 11 | 12:30 PM

A spontaneous decision to bring Sprite to the beach spawned a huge surprise. For one who hates to shower, Sprite actually loves the sea! In fact, she ended up swimming in the sea for the first time!

RED RED RED
Monday, August 17 | 11:21 PM

I'm hardly so patriotic!

Wearing red just to get that 44% percent discount for this National Day buffet at Orchard Hotel on the nation's 44th birthday.

It's been a long while since we took a picture together as a family.

Road Trip Labore Makan Mayhem
Tuesday, May 5 | 10:25 AM

I took a road trip up to Malaysia over the weekend.

I had like 19 meals in one day - thanks to Joe, our KL friend who drove us around on a savoury tour.

The brown lasted a fun 24 hours before I had to give it up for a darker chocolate colour for work reasons.

The complete mayhem is found here.

simmer
Monday, April 27 | 5:02 AM

I had spent a fair bit of this weekend packing at my old home.  Imagine the simmering sentiments when I came across this patch of fur cluster, belonging to my deceased dog, tucked at the back of a shelf.

Back To The Future #1
Sunday, April 19 | 8:01 PM

My family had to vacate our previous home by the end of this month.  So now I'm stepping out of procrastination mode and shifting into super high gear to move my remaining stuff to my new pad.

I was packing the bulk of my photograph collection when I came across this today.

That's my folks on their wedding day.

an eye for dark places
Tuesday, March 31 | 9:26 AM

I was waiting at the car wash when these guys came across with some strange hi-tech tools and stuck it into a manpower just a few metres away from where I sat.

The first thought that came to my mind was, "Oh, that's a mighty mosquito power blaster!"  If you don't realise this by now, I hate mosquitoes.

Actually, I was close. That cool tool helps these workers spot chokes in the sewers and of course, mozzie breeding grounds.  Way to go!

commissioned
Monday, March 23 | 8:35 AM

Hooper, a former student, invited me to his Officer Cadet School Passing Out Parade last weekend.  It was one of those moments in life you feel like a proud parent.

Sharon, Shaun and myself waiting for 5.41pm - the exact time when the soldiers will march out onto the parade square. Hey!  We're the 3 S-es!

I could've been there many years ago.  This was one trip down memory lane.

The wow-moment when the troups marched into the stairways scattered among the audience.

The only group shot we have with the iconic SAFTI Tower in the backdrop.  Someone insisted that it has to be in the picture.

Out of the blue, 2 rainbows appeared basking in the orangey evening sky.   I believe this was seen all over the island and on local pictures on the internet.

The pictures are courtesy of Sharon's Facebook account.

new ride
Sunday, March 15 | 11:16 AM

Check out the new ride - SFS 44 C!

No, that belongs to a crazy friend of mine who changes car, just to borrow the local expression, like one changes underwear.

I just realised this after uploading the picture.  His car plate number and the lot number - they both feature the numbers "4".  Yes, my ride is the blue van with the common "3" on the plate and lot!  Seriously, we did not plan this.  I did not even realise that I had parked beside his new car until I met the group in the KIA showroom.

Just a little story about the van.  My kids always ask me why I do not change my van and buy a car instead 0 primarily because "the chicks don't dig vans".  After thanking them politely for their concern over my generations and usually with a friendly smack over their heads or backs, I'll tell them some of the following reasons :

- I'm not exactly a car person (although I'm a little smitten by the Kia Cerato Forte)
- I like the bootilicious space behind where I can put my bike/bulky stuff which I may bring from place to place and to the kids, YOU who often hitchhike for free rides in groups.
- it's the closest thing to a SUV or 4WD I get to manoevre and which I do not wish to splurge on at this point.
- the only con : I cannot drive into Malaysia on a G-plate.  I can live with that.

Back to the new ride.  It is also a FREAKING convertible!  How insane is that??!!!

Batman!
Tuesday, March 3 | 10:33 PM

Recognise this?

Yes, it's the toy Batmobile from the latest Batman movie.

Caleb here (or was it Daniel, one of the twins of a friend of mine) demonstrating to Colin and myself how the Batmobile transforms into...

 ...transformation in progress...

This is confusing.  The Batmobile that I own when I was a kid was so much simpler.
Come to think of it, I really miss it!

That looks like some Bat fortress of sorts.  This is so complicated.

Caleb's good at this!  He told me that there's the bank vault on the right - I thought it was some special washine machine of sorts to do Batman's spandex suit.  :p

He's done!  It's a sky scraper!
Darn!  I should have kept my childhood Batmobile!

I hate working on Sun
Sunday, February 22 | 10:23 AM

Occasionally, I have to do makeup lessons on Sunday mornings.  I totally dread that of course.  I dislike the fact that I have to rush back from my breakfast with my family.  I dislike not being able to laze around in bed while catching up on the pre-recorded television series.  I also dislike having to switch to work mode so early in the morning and on a Sunday?!

Well, on the bright side, I will be meeting up with some friends for lunch later and I might just bring Spirte for a walk in town.

In the meantime, while my student was checking up some words in the dictionary, I took some snapshots of my two companions.

This is my coffee/tea maker which I'd bought from a Starbucks outlet in Kuala Lumper during the December holidays.  It comes with a plunger which was exactly what I had been searching for for the longest time.  In fact, up til today, I have not come across this set in any local outlets.

I am trying out this floral tea mixture which I also bought from a Chinese Tea Shop in KL.  It is supposed to have some health properties which I am not aware of - well, it did come with an information sheet except that the text is in Chinese, which I cannot decipher much now...:P

They are dried versions of real flower buds.

Of course, my other faithful companion, Sprite, is lying at my feet and napping like any decent person would do on a Sunday morning.

canine anxiety
Sunday, January 25 | 7:17 AM

This is my collection of pet writings I've amassed over the past 2-3 years or so.  I have not read any of them save for the one on the extreme right which I've embarked on recently in view of Ponyo's arrival.  Perhaps it was post-January's-death-depression-cum-denial in 2007 that prompted me to shelf them aside.  Deep inside, I know someday, someday I will have another dog.  Someday, I will be a better master of faithful canines (Opps!  Am I thinking of raising an entire farm in my new pad???) and my inner demons.  Yes, I'm totally convinced that pets are therapeutic.  In fact, I'm contemplating bringing them to my work place to tame some hyper-kids -  which I know will never happen - but someday, perhaps?

I'm spending the weekend catching up with some friends and clearing up the odds and ends around the living room to prepare for the canine invasion.   Maybe I can even finish up one of the above books???

I may even share the coincidences and surprises behind Ponyo's adoption!
