| 12:54 AM
A 8-9 hr coach ride brought us into the town of Puno. Situated even higher (spell COLDER too!) than Cusco at more than 3500m above sea level, Puno is a touch and go business, for me that is. The remaining girls have gone out for a walk around town before we leave for Bolivia in less than 2 hrs´time. Today being SUn, alomst every shop is closed and the streets deserted so I thought of giving the walk a miss just to compose this update. Anyway, Puno. Where´we´re staying, a dogey hotel sits on the outskirts of the local square and a stretch of very touristy street where the major banks are also located. HAving seen a few towns in Peru, they are now beginning to look the same. The heart, vibrant at night with touristis and even the locals, while the fringes look pathetic with their half dusty completed buildings - think wire structures worshipping the skies and weathered bricks fronting every shophouse. We´d walked to the bus terminal after yesterday´s day trip to the islands and man, it feels like being lost in some PC game espousing the end times. But the occasional sightings of young couples taking walks and some making out (in the freezing cold!) at shelters scattered along the lonely stretch, gave it a more human feel. battle

If u do get a chance to live wild and free like me, haha, and a chance to head to peru, U MUST chk out Cusco. Its main square has a Parisian (not that I´ve been there!) romantic feel to it. There you are surrounded by colonial type buildings, nothing short of the church of course. There´s even a Macs here which gives u free wireless! Come night time, the lighting will just take your breath away. Security is tight here and police constables frequently whistle off persistent touts with their wares. Some of the latter include v v young kids who´ll put on the most doleful eyes and sweetest voice just to make you part with your sols. Romantic atmosphere aside, the other streets are very polluted. Exhaust fumes puke from every mobile vehicle that ply the roads. These are accompanied by the incessant car horns of super impatient drivers. For those reasons, I try to spend my last day in Cusco 2 days ago at the quieter main square people watching and airing my socks and feet in full view of the public. Wet from the last rainy day on the trek, my shoes and socks dried within an hour under the warm afternoon sun. Who cares? I´m just a tourist right? lol

I understand it´s raining a lot back in Sg. It is so here too. Having misplaced my wind jacket on the trek - the jamban door to be exact on one of my flights there to take a dump - it get super chilly just walking ard the towns. Thankfully I have a down jacket from Karen which keeps me nice and warm. Top that off with the purple poncho and I look puffy just like Barney the dino. :)

The 14 hr coach ride took 23 hours. Delayed by roadblocks put up by locals who went on strike.Have arrived in Cusco, an awesome city in Peru. U must ALL visit it one day. It has all the trappings of modernity with touches of the old peruvian culture. And it´s the launch pad for machu pichu. We might try fried guinea pig soon! walk

Shit happens, so they say.First the false ceiling to the master toilet started to leak. Then the car battery went flat. These happened 2 weeks prior my departure. To add to my woes, the dogsitters played me out from time to time during my 3 month long arduous search for suitable candidates/hotels for Sprite. This is on top of my work and struggle to recover from that incessant cough from Hong Kong since 19/9. I will pesevere! The Beginning

My 3 amigos for the next 3 months! My heartfelt thanks to Winston for his 70L Eagle Creek backpack and Shyen for the Northface duffel bag and for turning up last night to help me pack so that "I won't become a liabiilty for the group." for forgetting something in the midst of my hectic schedule. Haha! I truly appreciate friends who tell you like it is.Check out the compact contents within. This morning, Shyen even emailed me stuff I've not set aside for her to pack in yesterday! I'm truly blessed. The beauty of the duffel is that it doubles as a protection for the backpack when it tumbles and turns on the converyor belt after checking it in. Its primary function, of course, is to contain all the shopping bonanza! Now, here's temperamental NATalie which I have to send in for repairs later today AGAIN because she cannot detect wireless or wireless connections now. And she's only less than 4 months old! Nevertheless, my deepest appreciation to whiz kid, Nathaniel Chua, for helping me install numerous cool stuff on NATalie, Debbie and Ariel. Nesting on top of her humps (or bumps), is some chewys - courtesy of Queenie, my student - for the trip. Thanks! On Fire

Tell you where you need to go Tell you who you need to be Tell you what you need to know Tell you when you'll need to leave But everything inside you knows Says more than what you've heard So much more than empty conversations Filled with empty words Chorus: And you're on fire When he's near you You're on fire When he speaks You're on fire Burning at these mysteries Give me one more time around Give me one more chance to see Give me everything you are Give me one more chance to be... (near you) Cause everything inside looks like Everything I hate You are the hope I have for change You are the only chance I'll take Chorus: When I'm on fire When you're near me I'm on fire When you speak And I'm on fire Burning at these mysteries These mysteries... I'm standing on the edge of me (x3) I'm standing on the edge Of everything I've never been before Chorus: And I'm on fire When you're near you I'm on fire When you speak (yea) I'm on fire Burning at these mysteries... the first time

No. This is not a lewd confession about one's first sexual experience. I'm watching a taped episode of Oprah on Americans voting for their president earlier this year. For many, it was the first time casting their votes. Folks interviewed on the Oprah episode talk about why they decide to make the vote this time round. Many admitted to being complacent during previous elections. But this year, the possibility of witnessing an African American candidate take up the mantle and change history forever, spurred on by many celebrities' call on media blitz to vote, prompted numerous to stand up and be counted. First time. Here on this little red dot, most of us even don't even need to vote due to the unique political situation. This has sort of bred a "Why bother?" attitude in me. Am I complacent with regards to local politics therefore? Seriously, I'm too busy to bother. Besides, voting is as "meaningless" as it is in Russia or Africa, as two interviewees on Oprah had so aptly commented, because there is only one candidate or a party involved, or in Singapore's case, a sure-win sweep for the dominating party. Nevertheless, I'm inspired once again by stories of ordinary people coming out of their comfort zones and making history. Once again, am I looping around in my comfort zone like a scratched vinyl record? Labels: media, politics, ramble yummy!
