dangerous

On our first night in Lima, Peru, we were warned by the driver who picked us up and the front desk person at the hostel we had put up at NOT to head out at night. If we really have to, we should not carry any watches, necklaces, cameras or anything that may draw attention to ourselves.
The next morning, I came across this advertisement unit whose glass cover was smashed.
I cannot read Spanish but given the image, I thought it was done so as part of the advertisement gimmick. But I believe I was wrong. If I was indeed right about the vandalism (and however ironic the picutre may be), the warnings against roaming late at night in Lima did remind me that I am no longer in almost crimeless Singapore.
