I heard some noises while I was near a road junction some time back.

It turned out to be a mynah fussing over another of its kind.

My heart went out to the fallen mate when I saw the other pecking at it.

I tried to shoo off the attacker a couple of times. Then a realisation hit me - that is just the way in the animal kingdom - survival of the fittest! Sadly, it is sometimes that way too in our human world.

So I walked away with a heavy heart and let nature take its course.

Dear friends and SASS boys

Hi. Thanks for dropping in to read this.

I won't be with the school from Term 3 anymore. I'm writing this in case some of you (the younger ones) really believe my joke about working for the IR to clean toilets from Term 3 onwards. Sorry. If you took offense, I would have to take responsibility for my very bad joke.

Earlier in Term 1, I had indicated to the school my desire to return to full time teaching since my return from S USA in mid February. Nonetheless, I was informed in late Term 2 that there is no vacancy for an English teacher.

After the Meet-the-Parents Session in May, I was informed that a current MOE ruling states that even part time teachers (of which I am one) cannot tutor students from the same school. I had thought this only applies to full time teachers. Despite being a former English teacher, since my return to SASS as a partimer, I have steered clear of English Department matters because I am tutoring some SASS boys after I had quit as a full time teacher. All along, I have been helping out in the Pupil Welfare department.

So the current situation is this : if I choose to stay on in SASS, I have to stop tutoring existing SASS students. Unfortunately, I have already committed myself some time back to some loans which the renumeration from my part-time job with the school and my existing tuition kids (minus the SASS boys) together cannot pay for. Thus I am really left with one choice. Given that I am unable to go back full time teaching this year and unable to continue part time with the school as mentioned earlier, I have to discontinue with SASS for the time being.

I choose to write this to all of you to address theories which may arise as to why I suddenly disappear from the school from Term 3 onwards. :) Please keep in mind that I am very saddened by this decision which I have shared with only some of you prior to this note.

So while the nation is taken aback by the flash floods that hit us today, this is my heartfelt thanks to the wonderful school management, colleagues and boys who have made my stay as a part timer truly a fulfilling one. I miss full time teaching a lot but I do need to do what every practical Singaporean does - bring home the bacon.

I woke up on the morning of 4 June 2010 to a pleasant surprise...

A graffiti-painted train pulling into Kembangan MRT station was filmed by an intrigued individual who then posted it on YouTube. Just like the pimped up ride, the video made its round before hitting some raw nerves.

I really thought the graffiti added a sparkle to our rather "sterile" surroundings - a description made by a fellow foreign backpacker I had met on a trip years ago.

Anway, the practice of spray-painting trains can be traced to New York in the 1970s, when modern graffiti artists broke into subway yards to 'hit trains', usually along the sides of the cars. Unfortunately, the talented individual pulled his trick at the wrong place and at the wrong time. Not surprisingly, the authorities were quick to slap the "vandalism" label, citing terrorism experts who were concerned about the "breach of security", which comes at a time when public transport networks are viewed as potential terror targets. Just last month, it was revealed that the Orchard MRT station had been a possible terror target.

A reader of the popular online interactive website, STOMP, was not very tolerant of this bright spark by the vandal either:

"The Swiss vandal also needs to be severely dealt with. Years ago we also had another foreign vandal named Michael Fay, and we caned him for spraying paint on several cars.

"This case is no different. In fact it's far worse, since it was done on public property. Cane him as well, don't deport him. We need to show the world our stand on such crimes.

"This is a clear case of the kind of lousy imported values these foreigners bring with them. Why are they being anti-establishment when it's not even their country?"

Oh wow! With the recent slash and attack incident, where a local teen was attacked by some marauding foreign workers at the Kallang area, still fresh on our psyche, some must be wondering if Singaporeans are now paying the price for globalisation. Perhaps the recent government initiatives to promote the arts and the aesthetics have yet to rub onto that critic.

Nevertheless, the longstanding publication powerhouse, The Straits Times, concluded their report on 4 June 2010 with this very stark reminder on life on this tiny red dot of Singapore,

"Under the law, those guilty of vandalism can be fined up to $2,000 or jailed up to three years, and caned between three and eight strokes.

Those convicted of entering a protected place without permission can receive a maximum punishment of two years' jail and a $1,000 fine."

The pimped-up train has since been scrubbed and now plies the tracks looking sparkling clean again.

Incidentally, I was walking through an underpass late last month when I noticed the above remains of a graffiti which I had first come across almost ten years ago. Naturally, I whipped out my handphone and took a picture of it again. It was only then that I realised that the new addition to the frame was the NO CYCLING FINE sign at the far left hand corner. :)

After my work in school, I drove across the border for a much needed Great Escape.

as usual, I ran multi-errands at the land where humans do not operate at neck-breaking speeds.

After my RM$28 salon haircut at Holiday Plaza, I sent my Black Beauty for a snow wash at a nearby car wash place for an amazing RM$8. The friendly guys there even removed some alien scratch stripes for free! That was my dinner above while waiting for my car - RM$6+4

My last stop - Giant supermart. On the way there, I'd spotted the back alley of this row of shophouses which brought back some childhood memories.

Grocery and petrol to top up the tank - approximately RM$120.

Divide all the above costs by 2.3 and you will see why I head over to Johor Bahru on a regularly basis. ;)

See, I got the email the day after I paid for my ticket to the same movie at weekend rates! Nonetheless, they say 2 is better than 1. This being the second installment of the Marvel franchise, I should watch it twice, right?

Prior the screening of Iron Man 2, we were given a preview of an upcoming release by XBox360 Gaming Studios - Alan Wake. They brought in the regional Microsoft marketing guy and one of the game creators just for this publicity campaign. After a bumpy start - the mono speaker fell of its stand in the dark, the audience was given a sneak peak into this psychological thriller of a game by the same creators who brought us Max Payne.

My take on the fame preview? I am that asexual amoeba whose interest level has not moved up a single notch. I understand that console games take years to develop, in this case, Alan Wake required 4. For a game to compete in the current playing field of mindboggling graphics and great story pacing, I just don't get this newbie at all.

Perhaps the organisers shoud jazz up the presentation a lot more and pick a sequence from the game that is a lot more enticing?

Well, at least the freebies were quite decent.

Then of course, she dropped in.

With a wicked script and supersonic action hammered all over the narrative, the rest is HIStory of course.

Even though visitors may be allowed to come close to these animals in the wild, never touch the young ones or any one for the matter - because that is the tragic consequence which many foreigners do not take seriously.

LIMA: Peru yesterday scrambled helicopters to evacuate 2,000 tourists stranded in the Andes after torrential rain and mudslides killed five people and cut off access to the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu.

Tourists were trapped at the World Heritage site in the jungle in eastern Peru after the heaviest rain in 15 years flooded the area over the weekend.

An Argentine tourist and a Peruvian guide were killed in separate mudslides, the government said, while two other deaths were reported over the weekend. The fifth person was killed when a hillside collapsed. The authorities hoped to evacuate up to 800 people yesterday after helicopters rescued 475 tourists earlier.

Prime Minister Javier Velasquez, who visited the area on Tuesday, said 250 homes were washed away, along with bridges and parts of several highways.

Television images showed roads completely covered by fast-moving water and fallen rock. People sought to cross swollen rivers on foot, submerged up to their chests.

'The situation is chaotic,' Machu Picchu guide Washington Farfan told Reuters by telephone from the site as tourists waited for a helicopter ride out.

Built in the mid-15th century, Machu Picchu lies 1,100km south-east of Lima and is Peru's top tourist destination. Every year, about a million people visit the site - which sits around 2,400m above sea level.

A state of emergency has been declared and train services between the Inca ruins and the nearby city of Cuzco have been suspended.

Besides the trains, the only other way to reach the site is to trek 45km through the mountains - a three- to four-day trip, on average.

'We're doing everything that's humanly possible to evacuate tourists,' Trade and Tourism Minister Martin Perez told CPN radio. He said the government was sending up to 10 helicopters to provide aid, but that their arrival would depend on the weather.

'Everyone is fighting for a place on the helicopter... The help we've received so far is not enough,' a Peruvian tour guide told CPN radio. The United States Embassy is sending four helicopters to help the 400 Americans trapped there.

People have been sleeping in Machu Picchu village's train station and its central plaza after hostels ran out of space. Restaurants have also raised prices as food supplies run down.

Travellers are angry and worried, and some are getting desperate, said town spokesman Ruben Baldeon on Tuesday.

'We have nothing to eat and have no idea as to how much longer we're going to have water,' an Argentinian tourist told CPN radio.

While the downpour has ended, meteorologists say light rain could be expected for the rest of the week. The rainy season in Peru's southern highlands is expected to last through March.

S'poreans among those awaiting evacuation

SINGAPOREAN siblings Seow Yi Qi, 28, and Seow Yi Xin, 24, are among the foreigners stranded in Machu Picchu.

Miss Seow, a graduate of the National University of Singapore, left Singapore on Jan 18 to join her brother, a student at Oxford University, in Britain before the two of them flew to Peru together.

There, they went on a three-day trek to Machu Picchu with a group of 12 others and a local guide.

They have been sleeping in a big outdoor field since Sunday while awaiting evacuation.

Their father, Mr Seow Kang Seng, told The Straits Times that his children's key concern is about the food supply running out.

He has been in daily contact with them via text messaging.

'My daughter is very worried and already an Argentine tourist has been killed by the flood,' he said.

'I just want them home safely soon,' he added.

When contacted, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is aware that there are five Singaporeans affected by the situation in Machu Picchu. 'The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in contact with the affected Singaporeans and is rendering the necessary consular assistance.'

Yesterday she was a total wreck - the constant cries lasting for eternity, the tumbling back and forth with her minder to get sleep and frequently disrupting my view of the onboard movie - incidentally entitled Onboard Baby, then the poo and its accompanying array of smells during the makeover. Eventually, I put on my earpiece, gave up on the following horror movie and prayed for sleep to consume me.

This morning, I'm playing peekaboo with this little ball of energy. If the time comes with my own, I believe the joy with play would accompany the love with patient forbearance? Meanwhile, I'll just try to enjoy the former on my solitary journey.

Down with nausea (vommited 2x) overnight and just 2 days before the big Machu Pichu trek. I do not even want to put up the picture of myself looking absolutely drained. First signs of the undesirable AMS (Acute Mountain Poisoning)?
